Toronto president Brendan Shanahan knows change must come to the Maple Leafs.

One month into the new job, he cautions he's "realistic that you can't do everything overnight," knowing that 29 other teams aren't going to give up assets for Toronto's benefit.

The Hall of Famer hinted during a phone interview Wednesday that changes could continue into the season.

Shanahan will make moves to shape the Leafs, though he says he agrees with general manager Dave Nonis that there's roster flexibility because players don't have full no-trade clauses.

That could mean he has big plans or he's open to listening to potential trade offers.

The Maple Leafs looked like playoff contenders in early March, but an eight-game losing skid helped derailed their season.
