A brief look at the opening round Thursday at The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass:

LEADING: Martin Kaymer tied the Stadium Course record at 9-under 63.

TRAILING: Russell Henley made nine birdies in his round of 65.

RECORDS: Kaymer became the fourth player to shoot 63 on the Stadium Course. The others were Robert Castro (2013), Greg Norman (1994) and Fred Couples (1992). The German set the record with a 29 on the front nine. No one has ever shot 29 on either nine.

NO. 1: Of the four players with a chance to go to No. 1 this week, Bubba Watson had the low score at 69. Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar shot 71. Adam Scott had a 77.

TURNAROUND: Geoff Ogilvy was 4 over through five holes. He made seven birdies on his last 10 holes for a 69.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Justin Leonard holed out from 147 yards for eagle on the first hole.

ISLAND GREEN: Eleven players hit tee shots into the water on the par-3 17th hole. Bryce Molder hit two shots into the water at the island green.

LOW SCORES: Sixty-seven players in the 144-man field broke par. That's the same number of rounds under par in the first round last year.

NOTEWORTHY: Matt Kuchar is 7-over par on the 18th hole in his last five rounds.

QUOTEWORTHY: "Every hole is a birdie opportunity, but every hole is a double bogey opportunity." — Ernie Els.
