Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Angel Cabrera carded a 3-under 69 on Friday, but fell into a share of the lead after two rounds of the Wells Fargo Championship.
Cabrera, a two-time major champion, was joined at 9-under-par 135 by Martin Flores, who birdied two of his last three holes for a 4-under 68.
While Cabrera has two majors to his name, they are his only PGA Tour wins. Flores is still searching for his first tour title.
Reigning U.S. Open champion Justin Rose posted a 5-under 67 in round two and moved into third place at minus-8 at Quail Hollow.
J.B. Holmes (67) and Shawn Stefani (68) share fourth at 7-under 137. Former major champions Martin Kaymer (69) and Stewart Cink (70) were joined in fifth place at minus-6 by Kevin Kisner (66).
Defending champion Derek Ernst rallied with a 4-under 68 to soar into a share of 17th at 3-under 141.
Cabrera poured in a 23-footer for birdie on the 10th, his first hole Friday. He gave that back at the 12th, where he missed a short par putt. After a birdie on the 15th, Cabrera stumbled to another bogey on No. 17.
The Argentine rolled in a 9-foot birdie try on the fourth and made it two in a row as he 2-putted for birdie on the par-5 fifth.
Cabrera got up and down for birdie on the par-5 seventh to regain a piece of the lead. He chipped to four feet and converted that putt for birdie on No. 8 to move atop the leaderboard at 10-under.
However, at the ninth, his last, Cabrera found sand with his second shot and failed to get up and down for par.
"I had a great day today, especially on my back nine. It's unfortunate to finish with a bogey, but I'm in position. I hit the ball really well through there and made the putts that I had to," said Cabrera of his run from four to eight. "And for that reason, I'm in the position I need to be."
Flores, who also played the back nine first on Friday, made a 4-footer for birdie on 10, then holed out for eagle on No. 11 to jump to minus-8.
After three pars in a row, Flores birdied the 15th from 11 feet out to move atop the leaderboard. Around the turn, he 3-putted the first for double bogey to slide from the lead.
Flores, who has four top-20 finishes in his last six PGA Tour starts, fought back into a share of the lead with a kick-in birdie on the seventh and another short birdie putt at No. 8.
"First of all, mentally I've been patient and comfortable on this golf course. It just seems to fit my eye," Flores said. "I don't know what it is, but consequently I've driven the ball pretty well and it's given me a lot of short irons on the greens that have been firm in some areas, also holed some putts, so it's been pretty good."
NOTES: Flores hasn't had a top-10 finish since tying for fourth last year at the John Deere Classic, and that was his career-best finish on tour ... This is the third cut Cabrera has made this season in 10 starts ... Cabrera's only other 36-hole lead was at the 2007 U.S. Open, where he went on to beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by one ... In 2007, Woods became the only 36-hole leader at this event to go on and win the title ... Peter Hanson withdrew during the second round with a back injury ... The cut line fell at 1-over-par 145 with 73 players moving on to the weekend, including 2012 winner Rickie Fowler and 2010 champ Rory McIlroy, who both made the cut on the number ... Among those that missed the cut were Lee Westwood, Jimmy Walker, Darren Clarke and former champions Lucas Glover and Sean O'Hair.
