Florida State's Jameis Winston started his first two games of the season last week — both as a designated hitter — had his first extra-base hit of the season and earned his second save of the year.

The Heisman Trophy winner's injured left hand is getting better, which allowed coach Mike Martin to give him more opportunities at the plate. He injured ligaments in his hand against Duke in the ACC football championship game.

A look at how the 20-year-old sophomore fared last week:

___

IN RELIEF: The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder recorded his second save of the season in a 4-1 win against South Florida on Wednesday. He entered in the ninth inning and the first batter reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Winston retired the next three batters on two ground balls and fly out to left field. His pitching line for the week: 1 inning, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 K, 0 BB, 4 batters faced.

AT THE PLATE: During the week, Winston was 1 for 10 in four games. On Wednesday South Florida, Winston went 1 for 4 as the designated hitter and had an RBI double to right field in the first inning. Winston later scored on a John Sansone single. Winston ground out the next three at-bats. He was 0 for 4 in the series opener against Maryland on Friday, including two strikeouts. Winston's line this week: 4 games, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 HBP.

IN THE FIELD: Winston entered the game in the top of the seventh inning Sunday and played right field. He did not field a ball.

HIGHLIGHT: The RBI double against South Florida was both Winston's first RBI and his first extra-base hit of the season.
