Second-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada handled Spaniard Lara Arruabarrena 7-5, 6-2, third-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia outlasted German Julia Goerges 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) and eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China cruised past Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-1, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Croat Ajla Tomljanovic drilled American qualifier Victoria Duval 6-3, 6-0, American Christina McHale discarded Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan 7-5, 6-1 and Caroline Garcia of France beat Sharon Fichman of Canada 6-2, 7-5.
