KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia – To U.S. ski racer Bode Miller, the folks in charge of logistics at the Sochi Olympics are on the clock — and running out of time. He did, however, say this with a smile.
Miller has been around the Olympic block — these are his fifth Winter Games — and so after being fastest in the first downhill training run Thursday, he was asked what he makes of the housing situation. While Miller began by saying, "My experience so far has been good," he quickly added: "I mean, our area is not quite finished, I wouldn't say."
The U.S. Ski Team is not staying in an athletes' village up in the mountains; it has separate housing.
In general, Miller said, the preparation for these Olympics "was very rushed, is what you get the impression of; that everything isn't quite done; they could use a little bit more time."
Still, the five-time medalist noted that there have been such issues at all of his Olympics.
"Even Salt Lake," in Utah in 2002, Miller said, "seemed like they were scrambling at the end to get stuff done."
And then he delivered his laugh line.
"I won't pass any judgment 'til after the opening ceremonies," Miller said, chuckling, "so they have another few hours."
