Melbourne, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - The 14th-seeded tandem of Lukasz Kubot and Robert Lindstedt beat the duo of American Eric Butorac and South African Raven Klaasen in Saturday's men's doubles final at the 2014 Australian Open.
Kubot and Lindstedt defeated Butorac and Klaasen by a 6-3, 6-3 margin in 65 minutes at Melbourne Park to capture their first Grand Slam doubles title.
Before playing at this year's Australian Open, Kubot of Poland and Lindstedt of Sweden had never won a tour-level match as a team.
Kubot became the first Polish man to win a Grand Slam men's doubles title since Wojtek Fibak won with Kim Warwick at the 1978 Australian Open.
"Well, to be honest, I was really focused today," Kubot said. "Maybe I played the best match of my life in doubles. Like you said, I didn't miss many balls; I didn't miss many returns."
Lindstedt, on the other hand, became the first Swedish player to win a Grand Slam men's doubles title since Simon Aspelin won the 2007 U.S. Open with Julian Knowle.
"Lukasz is one of the absolute best that I ever played with," Lindstedt said. "I played with a lot of greats, but there are few guys that it has worked so well with for me as a team as with Lukasz."
Butorac and Klaasen reached the title match on the back of some impressive victories.
They beat the Australian tandem of Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt in the opening round and stunned the defending Aussie Open champions and top-seeded Bryan brothers, twins Bob and Mike, in the third round.
