Arlington, TX – Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland had arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee on Friday.
The surgery was performed by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister at the Medical Center Arlington.
Holland sustained the injury in a fall at his home on Tuesday, and is expected to miss the beginning of the 2014 regular season.
"I am devastated by this injury," said Holland. "It was a freak accident at home that resulted in a hard fall on my knee. As upsetting as this is, my goal is to begin rehab and get back on the mound as quickly as possible."
The 27-year-old lefty went 10-9 with a 3.42 earned run average over 33 starts last season with Texas. He had a career-high in strikeouts (189) and innings pitched (213.0).
Over five seasons in the majors, all with Texas, Holland is 49-38 with a 4.36 ERA in 141 games, all but 18 of which are starts.
