Auckland, New Zealand (SportsNetwork.com) - Fifth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber and sixth-seeded Benoit Paire were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the Heineken Open, a final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.
Kohlschreiber snuck past Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, while Paire handled Pole Michal Przysiezny 6-4, 6-2 at ASB Tennis Centre. Kohlschreiber titled here in 2008 and was last year's Auckland runner-up to David Ferrer.
An upset came when Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez overcame eighth-seeded Dutchman Robin Haase 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) at this final hardcourt Australian Open tune-up.
Also on Day 2, American qualifier Donald Young topped Argentine Federico Delbonis 7-5, 6-2; Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu defeated Dutchman Igor Sijsling, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7); Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut outlasted qualifier and fellow countryman Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1, 3-6, 6-4; and Slovak Lukas Lacko downed wild card Jose Statham of New Zealand 6-3, 6-1.
In some second-round action on Wednesday, a top-seeded Ferrer will face Young, second-seeded German Tommy Haas will battle American wild card Jack Sock, and third-seeded American John Isner will be opposed by the qualifier Lacko. Isner titled here back in 2010.
Last year's French Open runner-up Ferrer is the reigning three-time and four-time overall Auckland champ.
