(SportsNetwork.com) - Formula One legend Michael Schumacher remains in critical condition in a French hospital on Monday after undergoing brain surgery following a skiing accident on Sunday.

According to the official Formula One website, Schumacher was expected to remain in a medically-induced coma.

"We can say he is fighting for his life," the website quoted the medical team as saying on Monday. "We judge him to be in a very serious situation. We cannot tell what the outcome will be yet."

Schumacher hit his head after a fall while on a family ski trip in the French Alps. He was wearing a helmet, which the doctors said likely saved his life.

The 44-year-old Schumacher, who retired from Formula One racing at the conclusion of the 2012 season, was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Moutiers and then moved to Grenoble.

A statement issued by the University Hospital in Grenoble says Schumacher suffered "a severe head injury with coma on arrival, which required neurosurgical intervention immediately," this according to the F1 website.
