Cowboys QB Romo injured, status in doubt

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - A day after Tony Romo saved their season, the Dallas Cowboys were preparing to go the rest of the way without him.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the team has "not made that determination at all" after reports surfaced on Monday saying Romo would miss the rest of the season with a back injury.

"We'll evaluate him on a day-by-day basis and make the best decision for our team," said Garrett.

Garrett did say the Cowboys would look to sign another quarterback because they didn't want to practice with just one. Kyle Orton was the only other quarterback on the Dallas roster as of Monday.

"Like with any player a day after the game, we want to see what the injury is and we've done that with Tony," said Garrett.

ESPN.com reported that Romo needs surgery for a herniated disk and will miss the remainder of the season, including Sunday's winner-take-all showdown with the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East title and any potential games after that.

Garrett said Romo would continue to get treatment for what he called "a hip or back-type injury." He said Romo had an MRI on Monday as part of the evaluation process to determine how healthy he is.

The Cowboys will evaluate Romo throughout the week to determine how he is responding to treatment and what his status is going forward, Garrett said.

The coach said he hadn't seen Romo on Monday.

Romo led Dallas to a 24-23 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday, throwing a touchdown pass to DeMarco Murray with 1:08 remaining to keep the Cowboys' playoff hopes alive after they trailed by nine points in the fourth quarter.

"I thought he did an amazing job yesterday fighting through the injury and giving us a chance to win the game," Garrett said.

The Cowboys (8-7) beat the Eagles (9-6) on Oct. 20 and must do so again to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2009 season.

It could be Orton, and not Romo, throwing passes.

Orton has started 69 NFL games, but none since 2011 while with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he landed after the Denver Broncos cut him in favor of starting Tim Tebow.

Orton, 31, has passed for 14,661 yards with 81 touchdowns and 57 interceptions in nine seasons.

"We have Kyle Orton here for a reason," said Garrett. "He understands what his role is."
