London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been handed a two-match suspension for making an offensive hand gesture toward Manchester City fans, it was announced Thursday.

Wilshere was seen raising his middle finger at City fans during the second half of Arsenal's 6-3 loss at the Etihad on Saturday.

The incident was missed by referee Martin Atkinson and his officiating crew, but the English Football Association was able to retrospectively implement discipline, opting to ban the midfielder for two games.

Wilshere will be absent from Arsenal's clash with Chelsea on Dec. 23 as well as the club's trip to West Ham on Boxing Day.
