FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith says he was "playing like a robot" at times earlier this season, leading to some of his struggles.

Smith says Wednesday that he was not improvising enough on the field, sticking to dropping back and passing. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said last week that he wanted to have Smith "turn it loose" more freely, and got positive results in the Jets' 37-27 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Smith worked out of the shotgun more than usual, allowing him roll out easier when the passing lanes were clogged. He threw for 219 yards and added 50 yards on five carries — including a 32-yard scramble.

Smith says he was trying to be too perfect at times, contributing to his multitude of mistakes.
