Heisman Trophy ballots have gone out. They are not due back for two weeks, which is a good thing because a race that not long ago seemed well-defined has been muddled in so many ways.

The sexual assault investigation involving Jameis Winston has left most voters in wait-and-see mode. The Florida State star would otherwise be the clear front-runner after the Heisman stock of several contenders crashed last weekend, opening the door of Alabama quarter AJ McCarron and others.

Even with potential criminal charges hanging over Winston, online sports book Bovada has him as the favorite to win the award.

The state attorney in Tallahassee, Fla., has said a decision on whether to charge Winston is unlikely to be reached this week, but maybe next.
