When the Calgary Flames want to honor one of their own for his effort, they do it in a way that also recognizes those who battle flames for a living.
After the Flames engaged in a team-building exercise with the Calgary Fire Department earlier this season, Chief Bruce Burrell gave them a helmet from the department. The Flames have decorated the helmet, which now bears logos for the CFD and the club. And after a game, the team picks a hardest-working player to wear the helmet.
"We think our values are consistent with their values," Burrell said. "We're proud to be able to support them in some small way."
It's a mutual admiration society with the team and the firefighters.
"The first connection with 'Flames' is fire," coach Bob Hartley said. "Police, firefighters ... to me, they're the ultimate people. They put their lives on the line every day. They're teaching us about teamwork and lessons of life."
