Alabama, Oregon still 1-2; Virginia Tech drops out

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Alabama and Oregon remained the top two teams in the latest Associated Press college football poll as the top four teams cruised to easy wins on Saturday.

Virginia Tech, however, tumbled all the way out from 16th after a stunning 13-10 home loss to Duke. Nebraska also dropped out from 25th following a loss at Minnesota.

The Crimson Tide kept rolling along Saturday with a 42-10 rout of Tennessee and again received 55 first-place votes as well as 1,495 points from a nationwide media panel for the fifth straight week.

Oregon again nabbed three No. 1 votes and totaled 1,432 points to keep the second spot in the aftermath of a 42-14 thumping of then-No. 12 UCLA, while Florida State and Ohio State held firm at three and four, respectively.

Florida State, following a 49-17 demolition of North Carolina State, again garnered two first-place votes. Ohio State, meanwhile, ran its unbeaten streak to 20 straight games under Urban Meyer with a 63-14 mauling of Penn State.

Baylor moved up one spot to five and is followed by Stanford, Miami-Florida, Auburn, Clemson and Missouri. Stanford moved up two spots, while Auburn climbed three places from 11th, as Missouri tumbled five spots from fifth after a 27-24 double-overtime loss to South Carolina.

The second 10 consists of LSU, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas Tech, Fresno State, UCLA, Oklahoma State, UCF and Louisville. Oklahoma moved up four spots from 17th after a 38-30 win over previously unbeaten Texas Tech, which dipped five places after its first setback. UCLA also dropped five places from 12th after the loss in Eugene.

Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan are joined by newcomers Michigan State and Arizona State in the final five. Michigan State is ranked for the first time this season thanks to four straight wins following its lone loss, a 17-13 setback at Notre Dame in September, while Arizona State was ranked for two separate weeks in September. The Sun Devils lost each time when ranked, falling to Stanford and Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish came up one point shy of Arizona State in this week's balloting.

Just three ranked matchups are on next Saturday's schedule, highlighted by the prime-time battle of unbeatens Miami-Florida and Florida State in Tallahassee. Also, Michigan State's first game as a ranked team comes at home against arch- rival Michigan, while Texas Tech will try to bounce back from its first loss against visiting Oklahoma State.
