St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Daniel Nava singled in Shane Victorino with the tying run to carry the Boston Red Sox to a 2-2 tie with the Cardinals after six innings of Game 3 of the World Series.
The Cardinals scored twice off Jake Peavy in the opening inning and had a chance to blow the game open in the fourth after loading the bases with nobody out, but couldn't get the clutch hit.
Nava struck out swinging to end the top of the fourth, when the Red Sox left two men on base.
Yadier Molina and Jon Jay sandwiched singles around a David Freese walk in the bottom of the fourth. Peavy caught Pete Kozma looking at strike three and Joe Kelly popped out to second. Matt Carpenter then popped out also in the infield.
The Red Sox finally reached the scoreboard the following inning. Xander Bogaerts tripled to center to lead off the frame. One out after Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked, pinch-hitter Mike Carp bounced a ball over the mound. The Cardinals were able to record the out at second, but Kozma's throw to first was late and Bogaerts scored.
The Cardinals wasted a chance with two men on base in the fifth when Freese flied out to right to end the inning.
Victorino walked to start the sixth. With one out, David Ortiz grounded a single into right off lefty reliever Randy Choate to put men at the corners.
Seth Maness then entered from the bullpen, but Nava lined a single to left to knock home the tying run.
Matt Holliday and Molina both singled in first-inning runs to back Kelly to the early advantage. Kelly left after fanning six batters over 5 1/3 frames.
Peavy yielded to Felix Doubront to start the fifth.
