Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila left Game 5 of the ALCS on Thursday night because of a knee injury.

The Tigers said Avila is day-to-day with a left knee patellar tendon strain.

Avila was knocked over in a hard collision at the plate as he tagged out Red Sox catcher David Ross in the second inning and appeared to twist his knee slightly.

Later, Ross' foul tip hit Avila in the mask in the fourth inning. Brayan Pena pinch-hit for Avila in the bottom of the fourth and remained in the game to catch for Detroit.

Avila had caught every inning for Detroit in the postseason before he was taken out Thursday. He was on the disabled list in August because of a concussion he suffered on a foul tip.
