KANSAS CITY, KAN. – The Busch brothers will be happy to get out of Kansas when the weekend is over.
On the first lap of second practice Saturday morning at Kansas Speedway, Kyle Busch put the rear of his No. 18 Toyota into the Turn 1 wall and forced his Joe Gibbs Racing crew to pull out a backup car.
Thirty minutes later and while the younger Busch's car was being repaired, Kurt Busch lost control of his No. 78 Chevy in Turn 2 and took damage to the back of that vehicle, which was also replaced by a backup.
Though Kyle Busch has wrecked in his last two starts on the 1.5-mile track since the repaving of the surface in 2012, he was second on the speed chart (185.179 mph) Friday afternoon. However, a cold front blew in Friday night and dropped temperatures by 30 degrees prior to the start of Saturday's practice.
Kurt Busch was also fast in first practice, running a lap of 184.697 mph. Neither the 2004 Cup champ nor his brother has ever had a top-five finish at the track. Kyle and Kurt qualified 18th and 19th, respectively, this weekend, but both brothers will have to start from the rear of Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400.
At about the 45-minute mark of Saturday's practice, Sprint Cup points leader Matt Kenseth also spun in Turn 1. Kenseth, who has won the last two races at the track, was second-fastest in practice with a lap of 185.142 mph.
"I just spun out on the apron, but I had to lock 'em up to keep from going out on the track," Kenseth said over the radio. "I was just barely going, pushing the gas at about 40 percent. They did a great job of picking this tire."
Kenseth received no damage to his car in during the spin, but the 2003 champ who rolls off seventh on Sunday predicted an "interesting race."
