Marseille holds off St. Etienne

Marseille netted a pair of first-half goals in a span of four minutes on Tuesday as the club earned a 2-1 victory over St. Etienne at the Velodrome.

Coming off a scoreless draw in league play against Bastia last week, Marseille opened the scoring in the 22nd minute through a goal from Benjamin Mendy and just four minutes later the club doubled its lead when Gilbert Wanga hit the back of the net.

St. Etienne pulled one back in the 32nd minute after Faouzi Ghoulam converted a penalty kick, but Les Verts were unable to produce an equalizing goal as Marseille claimed all three points.

The result pushes Marseille to 14 points, even with league leaders AS Monaco, while St. Etienne stays in fifth place with 12 points from seven matches.

Also in France on Tuesday, Lille rolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over Evian at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole.

Salomon Kalou opened the scoring for the hosts just 12 minutes in and a Jesper Hansen own goal in the 32nd minute double the advantage. Lille put the result away 19 minutes from time with a goal by Ronny.

Lille jumps into third place in Ligue 1 with 13 points, while Evian sits in 11th place with eight points.
