Baltimore Orioles All-Star Manny Machado exited Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a potentially serious injury to his left leg during the seventh inning.

Machado was rounding first base on a single when he stepped awkwardly and had his left knee buckle as he fell to the ground. Play was halted for several minutes as the Orioles' training staff attended to the young standout third baseman and eventually removed him from the field on a cart.

The Orioles have yet to release an update on Machado's status. The 21-year-old had gone 2-for-4 with a run scored prior to departing.

Baltimore had a 4-2 lead at the time of Machado's injury, but the Rays rallied for a 5-4 decision to send the Orioles to a fifth consecutive loss.

Machado's 2013 campaign is almost certainly over with Baltimore having just six more regular-season games and barely alive in the American League wild card race. The former first-round draft pick leads the AL with 51 doubles and hit .283 with 14 home runs, 71 RBI and 88 runs scored.
