Andy Murray will miss the rest of the tennis season to have minor back surgery.
The world No. 3 will undergo the procedure next week "in an effort to clear up a long-standing back problem," according to a statement released Thursday by his management company.
Murray withdrew from the Rome Masters in May after the problem with his back flared up and sought advice from specialists. He thrived on the grass courts this summer, winning Queen's Club and ending Great Britain's 77-year drought at Wimbledon with his second career grand slam title.
But he sought medical advice again after recent tournaments on hard courts and clay, according to the statement.
Murray's "aim is to be fully fit for the new season," the statement says.
