The tall German handled French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-2, 7-5 on the indoor hardcourts at Parc des Expositions.
In some other opening-round action, France's Kenny De Schepper drilled Dutchman Jesse Huta Galung, 6-3, 6-2; Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin whipped Argentina Federico Delbonis 6-0, 6-2; German Tobias Kamke dismissed French qualifier Marc Gicquel 6-2, 6-3; and Slovak Lukas Lacko topped German lucky loser Michael Berrer 6-3, 1-6, 6-2
This week's top seeds are France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon. Tsonga is the two-time reigning champion, having beaten this week's third seed, Italian Andreas Seppi, in last year's finale. Simon titled here in 2010.
Tsonga will open his stay against his countryman Roger-Vasselin, while Simon will face his compatriot De Schepper.
A Frenchman has captured the last four titles at this ATP World Tour 250 tournament.
The 2013 Metz champion will collect $98,000.
