The Carolina Panthers have placed guard Garry Williams on injured reserve with a pair of torn knee ligaments.

Williams made the start at right guard for the Panthers in Sunday's season opener against Seattle and suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee late in the first quarter.

The Panthers already had an abundance of offensive linemen on the roster and decided to fill the vacant spot by re-signing defensive tackle Sione Fua, who was among the team's final cuts last month.

Fua, a third-round pick in the 2011 draft, appeared in 24 games with 12 starts in two seasons with the Panthers. He has recorded 32 tackles with a forced fumble.
