Tashkent, Uzbekistan – Galina Voskoboeva won her first-round match Tuesday at the Tashkent Open, while fellow Kazakhstan native Yaroslava Shvedova was sent home early.
The seventh-seeded Voskoboeva posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maryna Zanevska of the Ukraine, while Serbia's Vesna Dolonc eliminated the eighth-seeded Shvedova with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 triumph.
Voskoboeva, one of Serena Williams' victims at the U.S. Open, will next meet Israel's Julia Glushko, a 6-3, 7-5 winner Tuesday over Tetyana Arefyeva of the Ukraine.
Shvedova was also ousted by Williams in the third round at Flushing Meadows.
Dolonc, meanwhile, had lost each of her last two first-round matches after a run to the third round at Wimbledon. She'll next face Luxembourg's Mandy Minella, a first-round winner on Monday.
Other winners Tuesday included Japan's Misaki Doi, Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic and Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor.
Doi claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Russia's Evgeniya Rodina and will next meet top-seeded Bojana Jovanovski in the second round, while Cetkovska disappointed the home crowd with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Uzbekistan wild card Nigina Abduraimova to earn a second-round date with third-seeded Yvonne Meusberger. Torro-Flor also ousted a native of the host country with a 6-0, 6-3 rout of wild card Arina Folts to set up a second-round encounter with defending champ Irina Camelia-Begu.
