Mast sails into Montreal Championship lead

Sainte-Julie, Quebec (Sports Network) - Dick Mast shot 3-under-par 69 on Friday and grabbed a 1-stroke lead after the opening round of the Montreal Championship.

Charles Schwab Cup points leader Kenny Perry is a shot back after carding a 2- under-par 70 at La Vallee du Richelieu Golf Club's windy Rouville Course.

Bernhard Langer, No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, shot 71 to grab a share of third place alongside David Frost, Tom Pernice Jr., Mike Reid and Mark Brooks.

Duffy Waldorf highlights a group of eight tied for eighth place at even-par 72.

Mast, who is seeking his first Champions Tour win in his 165th start, started strong, reeling off three straight birdies from the par-4 first. The 62-year- old stumbled to a bogey at the fourth, then parred five straight to wrap up an outward 34.

Around the turn, Mast parred two straight before getting back to 3-under with a birdie at the 12th. He went bogey-birdie from the 13th before parring out to grab the clubhouse lead.

"I think we got a little bit of a break playing second off," admitted Mast. "It was windy, but not as windy as it is right now. Got a chance to play four or five holes without real heavy wind and that's already an advantage. You never know when you are going to get a break, but I think I did."

Reid and Langer both caught Mast later in the day, but neither player could stay on top.

Steady despite the blustery condition, Reid opened with nine straight pars, then notched three birdies in a five-hole span around the turn to pull even with the clubhouse leader. He faltered from there, however, carding bogeys at Nos. 16 and 18 to end at 1-under.

Langer also fell victim to a late stumble after clawing his way to the top.

The 18-time Champions Tour winner reached 1-under with three birdies and two bogeys through nine holes, then birdied the 12th and 14th to grab a share of the lead. From there, Langer slipped to minus-1 with bogeys at Nos. 15 and 18.

NOTES: Mast's best finish on the Champions Tour this season is a tie for 15th at the Boeing Classic ... Perry won back-to-back major championships this season at the Senior Players Championship and U.S. Senior Open ... Defending champion Mark Calcavecchia carded an opening-round 74. He missed the tour's previous two starts due to back problems.
