Liverpool, England – Everton have completed a pair of deals to sign midfielder James McCarthy from Wigan and striker Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, the Merseyside club confirmed on Monday.
McCarthy makes the move to Goodison Park for a fee believed to be 12 million pounds. The Toffees had been linked with the Republic of Ireland international for some time and the deal appeared to break down when Wigan chairman Dave Whelan scoffed at the assertion that the transfer fee be paid in installments.
However, a deal has been hashed out and the 22-year-old McCarthy will be playing in the Premier League after being relegated to the Championship with the Latics last term.
Additionally, Everton bolstered its attacking talent by securing Lukaku on a season-long loan. Lukaku has played in three of Chelsea's four matches this season but the Belgian international found himself well down on the depth chart at the London club.
Finally, the Toffees added Manchester City defender Gareth Barry on a season- long loan deal. The 32-year-old will bring a wealth of experience to the Blues' backline having won a league title and FA Cup with the Citizens.
