Austin Sumner threw three touchdown passes and South Dakota State totaled more than 500 yards of offense in a 55-14 win against Butler on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Jackrabbits offensive stars Sumner and Zach Zenner each had a big game. Sumner, who completed 32 passes for 332 yards, has a good chance to become South Dakota State's all-time leading passer this season. Zenner, who carried the ball 16 times for 177 yards and two TDs, returns after leading the nation in rushing last season.

Sumner's first touchdown pass broke a 7-7 tie and the Jackrabbits rattled off 34 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

The Jackrabbits amassed 546 yards of total offense compared with Butler's 272.

Butler's Matt Lancaster passed for 140 yards and threw three interceptions. He was also the Bulldogs' leading rusher, with 6 carries for 63 yards.
