Garnett jumps in front at Cox Classic

Omaha, NE – Brice Garnett shot 8-under-par 63 on Friday to grab the lead after two rounds of the Cox Classic, the final event of the Web.com Tour regular season.

At the end of this tournament, the top 25 on the Web.com money list will earn PGA Tour cards, while the top 75 will advance to the four-event finals.

Garnett, currently No. 14 on the money list, has already locked up a PGA Tour card. He sits at 12-under-par 130 through 36 holes at Champions Run.

"This is the first week for me to be in this position," he said. "It's just fun to play. I know a lot of guys are feeling a lot of pressure. I'm just trying to enjoy the week and know that at the end of the week my dream will come true."

First-round co-leader Andrew Loupe, who began the tournament outside the top 75, shot 68 and dropped into a share of second place at 11-under. He stands alongside Wes Roach (66), Len Mattiace (64), Matt Bettencourt (64), John Peterson (65) and Bronson La'Cassie (65). Roach trails money-list No. 25 Patrick Cantlay by $2,807.

Manuel Villegas (63), Russell Knox (65) and Nick O'Hern (67) share eighth at 10-under, while Billy Hurley III, who shared the lead with Loupe after one round, is tied for 11th at minus-9 after carding a 70.

Garnett, who skipped last week's News Sentinel Open, started on the 10th tee Friday and birdied four of his first six holes. The 29-year-old Missouri native closed his outward stretch with bogeys at 16 and 18 around a birdie at the 17th to turn in 33.

"I haven't practiced my short game a lot," he said. "I was trying to react around the greens. I'm going with more of what the feel should be. I'm a feel player and I was getting too analytical around the greens. My short game was sharp today."

Around the turn, Garnett parred three straight, but he closed with a flurry, notching five birdies over his final six holes to secure the lead.

"Before last week I grinded really hard to get into this position," Garnett added. "It's exciting now. It's easier to play good when you are freewheeling things."

NOTES: Garnett is seeking his fist Web.com Tour win. His best finish on the Web.com Tour in 2013 is a tie for second at the Chile Classic ... Garnett matched his career-low round on Friday ... Brett Wetterich was disqualified prior to the start of the second round for signing an incorrect scorecard in round one. Matt Hill withdrew prior to the start of the second round ... Rafael Echenique withdrew during the second round due to of a rib injury ... Spencer Levin withdrew during the second round due to illness ... A total of 65 players made Friday's cut, which came at 4-under 138.
