Bryant back on top in Washington

Snoqualmie, WA – Bart Bryant found himself in familiar position atop the leaderboard Friday after firing an opening-round, 6-under 66 at the Boeing Classic.

Coming off his first Champions Tour victory at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, Bryant mixed eight birdies and a pair of bogeys Friday at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge to grab a 1-stroke lead over Duffy Waldorf and Bobby Clampett.

"Something that I really set as a goal was to be able to come back strong today and that may be why I got off to such a good start, but we were really focused on that," Bryant explained. "As soon as the tournament was over we started talking about this first round and trying to get ready to play."

Bernhard Langer, Kirk Triplett and Dick Mast carded matching 4-under-par 68s to grab a share of fourth place, while Fred Couples, Tom Lehman, John Cook and John Riegger all shot 69s to grab seventh.

Bryant, a Champions Tour rookie, carried the momentum from his inaugural win into Friday's first round, notching five birdies in a six-hole stretch from the opening tee.

"I would take that at the beginning of the day, yeah. In fact, I'll take it every day the rest of my life," said Bryant.

Bryant's scorching start came to a halt with a bogey at the seventh, but the 50-year-old parred Nos. 8 and 9 to turn in 32.

During his inward nine, he birdied the 11th, then turned the trick in succession from the 13th to reach 7-under, two strokes clear of clubhouse leaders Waldorf and Clampett.

The margin was reduced to a single stroke when Bryant stumbled to bogey at the par-3 17th, and it remained there when he parred the last.

"On the PGA Tour, the three times I won, every time I just fell apart the next week, so that was something I wanted to try to achieve this time," continued Bryant. "Of course it's nice to have that one extra day out here being a three-day tournament, so it was nice having a day of rest yesterday before I came back. But it's been great winning last week."

NOTES: Prior to his victory at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open, Bryant's previous win came at the 2005 Tour Championship on the PGA Tour ... The first-round leader has never gone on to win this tournament ... Kenny Perry, who ranks first in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, shot 2-under 70.
