Berea, OH – Brandon Weeden will be the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
Coach Rob Chudzinski made the announcement Tuesday, saying Weeden had earned the position ahead of Jason Campbell.
"I've always believed in guys earning things," said Chudzinski. "He's gone out and he's earned it. He's seized the opportunity and I'm very pleased."
Weeden, who started 15 games last year as a rookie, has had two very good outings this preseason. He has completed 18-of-25 passes for 229 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the offense to three TDs and two field goals in six series.
"I'm excited moving forward, it's very rewarding," said Weeden on Tuesday after being informed of the decision on Monday night.
The 29-year-old Oklahoma State product had a rough rookie season, completing just 57.4 percent of his passes for 3,385 yards with 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions for a 5-11 team.
Campbell signed with the Browns this spring after playing six games with one start for Chicago last year. He completed 32-of-51 passes for 265 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions as the primary backup to Jay Cutler.
In his two preseason games, Campbell has completed 18-of-21 throws for 143 yards with a touchdown. He'll give the Browns an established backup with NFL starting experience.
Campbell was selected with the 25th overall pick of the 2005 draft by Washington and spent his first five seasons with the Redskins before heading to Oakland for two years.
Over his time in the NFL, he has started 71 of the 77 games he has appeared in and has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 14,682 yards along with 76 touchdowns and 52 interceptions.
