Rookie Reed grabs Wyndham lead

Greensboro, NC – Patrick Reed fired a 6-under-par 64 on Friday to move into the lead through two rounds of the Wyndham Championship.

Reed, a PGA Tour rookie who is seeking his first win, completed 36 holes at Sedgefield Country Club at 11-under-par 129, one stroke ahead of reigning rookie of the year John Huh.

Huh, who, like Reed, is 23 years old, shot 62, the low round of the week thus far, tallying birdies of his final two holes to reach 10-under-par 130.

"We've been working extremely hard trying to fine-tune everything and I feel like lately with how I've been hitting the ball and how I've been putting just seems all to be clicking," said Reed. "I just need to put four rounds together and hopefully that's this week."

Twenty-year-old Jordan Spieth, who picked up his first career PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic in July, sits alone in third place at 9-under after a second-round 66.

This is the final event before the FedExCup playoffs start next week and players are fighting to get into the top 125 on either the FedExCup points list or the money list to keep their tour cards for next year.

First-round co-leader Ross Fisher carded a 69 and dropped into a tie for fourth place at 7-under with five others, including Rory Sabbatini, who shot 66. Fisher is 166th on the money list and 162nd on the FedExCup points list, so he'll need a big week to keep his card for 2014.

Spieth set the clubhouse mark with his 66, mixing seven birdies and three bogeys during his second round, but Reed and Huh had yet to make their respective moves.

Reed, who ranks 78th on the money list, went out off the 10th tee and tallied six birdies, including back-to-back birdies from the 12th during his outward 33.

Around the turn, he birdied the first, then reeled off three straight pars before notching another birdie at the fifth to pull even with Spieth.

After two more pars, Reed rolled home a 4-footer for birdie at the eighth to grab the lead and closed with another birdie at the ninth, draining a 10- footer to reach 11-under.

Like Reed, Huh went bogey-free on Friday and birdied his final two holes. He had eight birdies in all, while hitting all but one fairway and all but two greens in regulation to fall one shot shy of the course record.

Huh wrapped up his stellar round by sinking a 4-footer at the eighth (his 17th) and an 11-footer at the ninth to reach 10-under.

"Not 62," admitted Huh when asked if he saw this round coming. "It was more like maybe 64. But as I tell you, I drove the ball great since Masters, actually, it's been a long time, but I was able to put everything together and really pleased with it."

NOTES: With rain in the forecast for Saturday, officials moved up the third- round tee times. Players will go off Nos. 1 and 10 in threesomes beginning at 7:15 a.m. ET ... Reed's best finish on the PGA Tour this season is fifth at the St. Jude Classic ... Defending champion Sergio Garcia is tied for 15th at 5-under 135 after carding a second-round 70. He is hoping to join Sam Snead as the only back-to-back winners at this event ... The cut line fell at 1-under 139. Peter Hanson, who started the week at No. 126 on the FedExCup points list, missed the cut, as did No. 128 Brad Fritsch, No. 129 Padraig Harrington, No. 130 Bud Cauley, No. 131 Fabian Gomez and No. 132 Chad Campbell. Harrington will miss the FedExCup playoffs for the first time in his career.
