Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and French Open king Rafael Nadal posted second-round victories Wednesday at the $2.887 million Rogers Cup tennis event.

The second-seeded Murray got past capable Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) on the hardcourts at Stade Uniprix at this Masters 1000 tournament. Granollers was last week's surprise clay court titlist in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

The back-to-back Canadian Masters champion in 2009 and 2010 Murray is playing his first tennis since giving Great Britain its first male Wimbledon singles titlist in 77 years last month. He's currently riding a 13-match winning streak.

Up next for Murray will be talented Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who upended 13th- seeded Italian Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded former world No. 1 Nadal whipped helpless Canadian wild card Jesse Levine 6-2, 6-0 in 72 minutes. Nadal, like Murray, is also a two-time Rogers Cup champ, with his wins coming in 2005 and 2008.

Nadal is playing his first tennis since suffering a shocking opening-round loss at the hands of Belgian Steve Darcis at Wimbledon in the last week of June.

In other action involving top-10 seeds, No. 5 Czech Tomas Berdych beat Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-4, rising Frenchman Benoit Paire took out No. 8 Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), and Aussie qualifier Marinko Matosevic was leading No. 10 Tommy Haas 5-0 in the opening set when the oft- injured 35-year-old German retired from the match with a right shoulder problem.

Also on Day 3 in Montreal, Canadian wild card Vasek Pospisil handled Czech veteran Radek Stepanek, 6-2, 6-4 and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin outlasted Canadian wild card Filip Peliwo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Istomin's third-round opponent on Thursday will be world No. 1, reigning two-time and three-time overall Rogers Cup champ Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian star Djokovic beat Richard Gasquet in last year's final in Toronto, as this tournament shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

The 2013 Rogers Cup champion will earn $547,300.
