LEXINGTON, Ohio – Chip Ganassi had a plan when he hired Charlie Kimball to become the team's third driver in 2011. The tough part for Kimball was sticking to it.
Ganassi told Kimball to spend his first seasons on the IndyCar circuit gaining experience instead of trying to win. That patience finally paid off on Sunday as Kimball zipped by Simon Pagenaud in the Indy 200 for his first win in the series.
Kimball's team altered his pit strategy early in the race just in case the original strategy failed to work for Chip Ganassi Racing stars Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon.
The backup plan worked to perfection. Gunning it while other drivers tried to save fuel, Kimball led 46 laps on his way to Victory Lane.
