The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated relief pitcher Jared Hughes from the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Hughes had been sidelined since June 5 due to inflammation in his right shoulder, but did not allow a run over a combined eight innings while making seven appearances during a rehab stint with Triple-A Indianapolis that began in mid-July.

The 6-foot-7 righty put together a solid 2012 campaign for the Pirates, posting a 2.85 earned run average and two saves over 66 games that season, but has a 4.96 ERA while walking 10 batters through 16 1/3 innings at the big- league level this year.

To make room for Hughes on the active roster, the Pirates optioned pitcher Vic Black to Indianapolis. The rookie allowed two runs over four innings in three relief outings after being called up to Pittsburgh in late July.
