The San Diego Chargers have activated safety Brandon Taylor from the physically unable to perform list.

He sustained a knee injury last season.

Also Friday, left tackle Max Starks, who is battling King Dunlap for the starting job, got the day off.

Dunlap has been the starter in the offseason workouts and through the bulk of training camp. But a hip injury cut into his practice time recently.

When the Chargers signed Starks, a free agent who won two Super Bowl rings with Pittsburgh, many figured he'd become the starter.

Dunlap was the Eagles' starting left tackle last year before heading to San Diego. But he also lost his job at one point, and his performances were often considered inconsistent.

New coach Mike McCoy says the exhibition games will help decide the starters on the offensive line.
