The San Francisco Giants placed infielder Tony Abreu on the 15-day disabled list Monday due to left knee bursitis.

Abreu has started in 12 of the 34 games in which he's appeared this season and is hitting .266 with a homer and seven RBI. He began the season on the DL with a left knee sprain and missed most of spring training.

The Giants also optioned outfielder Kensuke Tanaka to Triple-A Fresno. Tanaka was hitting .267 with a pair of RBI. He had his contract purchased from Fresno on July 9 and started in seven of the 15 games he played in with the parent club.

The team also recalled first baseman Brett Pill and outfielder Roger Kieschnick from Fresno. Pill played in 14 games in the majors earlier this year and hit .148. He was batting .344 with 18 homers and 79 RBI at Fresno. Kieschnick, who will make his big league debut, was hitting .273 with 13 homers and 56 RBI in 101 games at Fresno.

The Giants start a three-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
