Bronx, NY – New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's 6-5 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Jeter appeared in just his second major league game of 2013, batting second and playing shortstop for the first time this season, going 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored. The 39-year-old reached the seats in right field on the first pitch he saw from Rays starter Matt Moore in his opening at bat.
He made his debut on July 11 against Kansas City as the designated hitter, but suffered a strained right quad while going 1-for-4 with an RBI during the 8-4 victory.
The savvy veteran missed New York's first 91 games while recovering from a fractured ankle. He first fractured his left ankle in Game 1 of last year's American League Championship Series against Detroit, then sustained another fracture during spring training.
Jeter was eligible to come off the DL on Saturday, but instead took part in a simulated game to determine if he was ready.
The Yankees opened a roster spot for Jeter by placing designated hitter Travis Hafner on the 15-day disabled list with a rotator cuff strain. Hafner underwent an MRI exam Saturday after an 0-for-4 effort at the plate in Friday's loss to the Rays.
Hafner is batting just .205 with 12 homers and 37 RBI in 81 games this season, his first with New York. He is 0-for-15 since the All-Star break.
