The New York Jets' quarterback competition can officially begin.

Second-round pick Geno Smith signed his contract on Monday, just three days before the full squad reports to training camp in Cortland, N.Y.

Smith is expected to compete with incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting role this season.

The Jets selected the West Virginia product with the 39th overall pick in April. He passed for more than 4,000 yards in each of his final two seasons with the Mountaineers, and in 2012 threw 42 touchdown passes and just six interceptions.
