The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired the rights to guard Nick Calathes from the Mavericks in exchange for lifting the protection on its 2016 second-round pick already owed to Dallas.

Calathes starred at the University of Florida before being selected by Minnesota in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft. His draft rights were subsequently traded to Dallas.

The 24-year-old Florida native played his first three pro seasons in Greece before spending the 2012-13 campaign in the Russian Professional Basketball League.

Calathes, the SEC co-Freshman of the Year in 2008 and a first-team All-SEC choice as a sophomore in 2009, was the EuroCup MVP in 2012-13 after averaging 12.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 17 games.

Memphis originally traded the protected 2016 second-round pick to Denver for Steven Hunter and a 2010 first-round pick in the summer of 2009. The Nuggets later sent the pick to Dallas as part of a trade for Corey Brewer and Rudy Fernandez in December 2011.
