The New York Yankees placed outfielder Zoilo Almonte on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain prior to Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox.

Almonte suffered the injury in the Yankees' 4-2 loss to the Red Sox on Friday. He hurt the ankle trying to beat out a double play in the second inning.

Almonte is batting .261 with one home run and nine RBI in 26 games this season. He becomes the 16th different player to spend time on the Yankees' DL this year.

New York also recalled outfielders Melky Mesa and Thomas Neal from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated infielder Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.
