PSG announced Tuesday that it has signed striker Edinson Cavani from Napoli for a Ligue 1 record transfer fee of $84 million.

The 26-year-old was Serie A's top scorer last season with 29 goals. He joins PSG on a five-year deal that breaks the previous Ligue 1 transfer record of $78.8 million, set earlier this summer with Radamel Falcao's move to Monaco.

"I'd like to thank everyone who made this transfer possible, it's a great project," Cavani said at Tuesday's press conference. "I'd also like to thank the people in Napoli who went out of their way to make it possible.

"I come here with lots of joy, lots of confidence, lots of hunger and lots of motivation to win major trophies."

PSG claimed the Ligue 1 title last season for the first time since 1994 and also reached the Champions League quarterfinals where it was ousted by Barcelona.
