James McCarthy and Marc-Antoine Fortune scored in the second half and Roger Espinoza had a successful homecoming as England's Wigan Athletic defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 in an exhibition match on Saturday.

Espinoza, who helped Ohio State to the 2007 NCAA title game in his only season with the Buckeyes, entered at the start of the second half and within seconds crossed the ball to McCarthy for a header and a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.

Fortune made it 2-0 in the 63rd but Ryan Finley cut the deficit 10 minutes later when he chipped a deflected service from Eric Gehrig.

Wigan, winners of England's all-comers FA Cup — the world's oldest soccer tournament — in mid-May, is on its first preseason trip to the United States.
