The Baltimore Orioles designated pitcher Jair Jurrjens for assignment on Friday to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Jairo Asencio, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Norfolk.

Jurrjens made only two appearances -- one start -- for Baltimore after he was signed to a minor league contract this past offseason. He allowed four runs over 7 1/3 innings of work.

The 27-year-old has struggled to regain his All-Star form with Atlanta in 2011, a season cut short by a knee injury. The Orioles decided to let him go after posting a 5.32 ERA over his last eight starts with Norfolk.

Asencio, 30, joins his fourth major league team and will make his season debut upon his first appearance. In 37 2/3 innings with the Tides this season, Asencio went 4-0 with 20 saves with a 2.15 earned run average over 34 appearances.
