New York, NY – The New York Rangers have locked up one of their cornerstone players for the foreseeable future, with the team announcing Monday it has agreed to terms with defenseman Ryan McDonagh on a reported six- year contract.
The Rangers did not release terms of the deal, but the New York Daily News reported that McDonagh -- one of the more intriguing restricted free agents on this year's market -- will receive $28.2 million over the next six seasons to prevent the possibility of him signing an offer sheet with another team.
McDonagh has been one of the Rangers' steadiest defensemen during his three NHL seasons, producing a plus-54 rating along with 12 goals and 48 assists in 169 games over that span. The 24-year-old has also played in 37 postseason contests during that stretch, notching one goal and seven assists.
The Minnesota native amassed four goals, 15 assists and a plus-13 rating over 47 regular-season tilts this past season, one year after posting seven goals, 25 assists and a plus-25 mark during a breakthrough 2011-12 campaign.
Selected 12th overall by Montreal in the 2007 NHL Draft, McDonagh was acquired by the Rangers as part of the June 2009 trade that sent veteran center Scott Gomez to the Canadiens.
McDonagh was one of four key restricted free agents on the Rangers' roster, with the team still attempting to work out agreements with forwards Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin and Mats Zuccarello.
