The San Francisco Giants have placed infielder Joaquin Arias on the 15-day disabled list after he was forced to undergo an emergency appendectomy on Sunday.

Arias has served as the Giants' primary utility infielder this season and has posted a .282 average with 10 RBI over 60 games, making starts at third base, shortstop and first base over the course of the year.

Nick Noonan was called up from Triple-A Fresno on Monday to take over Arias' role in the interim. The former supplemental first-round pick has spent a good part of this season on the Giants' roster, but has hit just .212 with four RBI over 48 contests.
