New York, NY – Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey and Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann have been named co-recipients of the National League Player of the Week for the period ending July 7.
Bailey tossed the first no-hitter in the majors last Tuesday, fanning nine and walking one over his 109-pitch outing, a 3-0 win against the San Francisco Giants.
The 27-year-old also tossed the most-recent previous no-hit game, last September against the Pirates, becoming the first pitcher since Nolan Ryan (1974-75 with California) to achieve the feat.
McCann strafed enemy pitchers last week for 15 hits in 25 at-bats, leading the majors with a .600 average. He also ranked first among all Senior Circuit batters with 22 total bases and second with an .880 slugging percentage.
The 29-year-old also recorded seven straight games with at least one extra base hit, the first Braves backstop to reach that mark since Earl Williams in 1972.
Others considered for the award were Philadelphia rookie hurler Jonathan Pettibone, Dodgers infielder Juan Uribe and All-Star pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman.
