The Pittsburgh Pirates activated starting pitcher A.J. Burnett from the 15-day disabled list Sunday.

Burnett will make his return on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs, despite not going through a rehab assignment.

The 36-year-old Burnett was 4-6 with a 3.12 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 14 starts for Pittsburgh before being placed on the disabled list with a right calf strain on June 13, retroactive to June 9.

To make room for Burnett on the 25-man roster, pitcher Ryan Reid was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Reid, 28, allowed two runs over 11 innings and earned a save in seven appearances.
