Three Orioles named All-Star starters

New York, NY – Three Baltimore Orioles were named starters for the American League squad in the 2013 All-Star Game.

Rosters for this year's Midsummer Classic, which will be played July 16 at Citi Field in New York, were revealed Saturday.

Chris Davis, whose 33 home runs lead the majors, will start at first base for the AL, while Baltimore teammates J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones got the nod at shortstop and in the outfield, respectively.

Rounding out the outfield in the AL are Angels phenom Mike Trout and Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista.

Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, the league leader in batting average and RBI, will man the hot corner, while Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz were also selected to start for the Junior Circuit.

The National League will see two Cincinnati Reds, two St. Louis Cardinals and two Colorado Rockies starting in the field. Joey Votto and Reds teammate Brandon Phillips will be at first and second base, while the Cardinals' Yadier Molina and Carlos Beltran will be behind the plate and in the outfield.

Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki may not be able to start at shortstop because he is currently on the disabled list, but Carlos Gonzalez will surely represent the Rockies when he patrols the outfield.

David Wright will start at third base in front of his hometown Mets fans, while Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper was voted into the starting lineup at 20 years old.

Pitchers and reserves were also announced Sunday, chosen by All-Star managers Bruce Bochy and Jim Leyland as well as a player ballot made up of votes from players, managers and coaches.

The AL pitchers include Tigers starters Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, Seattle hurlers Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma, Boston's Clay Buchholz, Toronto's Brett Cecil, Oakland's Bartolo Colon, Chicago's Jesse Crain and Chris Sale, Texas' Yu Darvish and Joe Nathan, Cleveland's Justin Masterson and Minnesota's Glen Perkins.

Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was named an All-Star for the 13th and final time, as the future Hall of Famer has already announced this will be his last season.

The AL reserves are catchers Jason Castro of the Astros and Salvador Perez of the Royals, Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder, Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Rays infielder Ben Zobrist, Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Royals outfielder Alex Gordon, Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter and Blue Jays designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion.

National League starting pitchers selected include San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, Arizona's Patrick Corbin, Florida rookie Jose Fernandez, New York's Matt Harvey, Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw, Philadelphia's Cliff Lee, Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke, St. Louis' Adam Wainwright, Chicago's Travis Wood and Washington's Jordan Zimmermann.

The only relievers selected in the NL were Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman, Pittsburgh's Jason Grilli and Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel.

The NL reserves are Giants catcher Buster Posey, Diamondbacks first basemen Paul Goldschmidt, Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig, Cardinals second basemen Matt Carpenter, Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro, Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez, Brewers shortstop Jean Segura, Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer, Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez

The Tigers lead all teams with a total of six total All-Stars, while St. Louis leads the NL with five.

Once again, fans will have the ability to select one more player for each team in the Final Vote.

The American League players on the ballot are all relief pitchers -- Steve Delabar of the Blue Jays, David Robertson of the Yankees, Koji Uehara of the Red Sox, Tanner Scheppers of the Rangers and Joaquin Benoit of the Tigers.

National League contenders are Dodgers rookie phenom Yasiel Puig, Giants outfielder Hunter Pence, Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond.
