The San Jose Sharks weren't among the initial teams to dive into the free agent pool.

Instead, they opted to re-sign budding star Logan Couture to a five-year contract extension and ink recent acquisition Tyler Kennedy to a two-year deal on Friday.

Couture, a center, led the team with 21 goals and ranked second with 37 points while playing all 48 games last season.

The 24-year-old Couture, selected ninth overall in the 2007 draft by San Jose, has compiled 89 goals, 78 assists and a plus-31 rating in 232 career games with the Sharks.

Kennedy, 26, came over in last week's trade with Pittsburgh for a 2013 second- round pick. He posted six goals and five assists in 46 games for the Penguins this past season.

A member of the Penguins' Stanley Cup-winning club in 2009, the forward has tallied 76 goals and 92 assists in 372 career games, all with Pittsburgh.
